A Year of Roses - 2010

Your Cherry Capital Rose Society board has been busy planning programs for 2010, based on the requests you made in this year's membership survey. You won't want to miss a single event. The CCRS Directories will soon be back from the printers, but in the meantime, add these dates to your calendars:

FEBRUARY 18 (THURSDAY) - "What's Bugging You? Here's the Dirt" Pest management and soil tips from Dr. Duke Elsner, MSU County Extension Agriculture Agent. The Board is providing a host of wonderful chocolate treats as well. Friends Church - 5th and Oak Streets - Traverse City 6:30 p.m.

MARCH 18 (THURSDAY) - "Companion Plantings - Roses' Best Friends" with Cathy Hamilton. Friends Church. Cathy will share a wide range of suggested plant choices and tips. 6:30 p.m.

MAY 1 (SATURDAY) - "Fertilizer Mixing, Potluck Lunch & Tool Sharpening Clinic" Help with the mixing and get a discount on your organic rose fertilizer. Bring a dish to pass for our amazing potluck lunch. And bring those dull tools for a sharpening clinic. We'll be at Gail & Dave Maison's home - 2612 Wilsey Road in Traverse City. From 9:00 a.m on.

MAY 20 (THURSDAY) - "Do It Yourself Irrigation" at the home of Jonn & Evelyn & Marissa Fender. Jonn will teach us the basics of installing our own inexpensive irrigation system. We'll give some important fertilizer tips as well. 2402 Griner Pkwy, Interlochen. 6:30 p.m.

JUNE 24 (THURSDAY) - "Container Plants - How to Design Plant and Maintain Beautiful Gardens-in-apot" by Martha Dively. We'll meet in Martha's beautiful garden on Old Mission Peninsula, 18344 Dougherty Lane, at 6:30 p.m.

JULY 22 (THURSDAY) - "Roses and Herbs - Fragrant Partners" by Lin Emmert. Lin is an expert in both herbs and roses - we'll get to visit two lovely gardens - Lin's and Jan MacDonald's on Omena Point. We'll begin at 6:30 p.m. at 4750 N. Omena Point Road, Omena, MI

AUGUST 19 (THURSDAY) - "Garden Walk - Two Gardens: A Study in Sun and Shade." We'll begin the evening in Judy Crowe's sunny spot (1131 Anderson, Traverse City) and then walk down the street to Sheila Gay's dappled shade garden (1209 Milliken Drive). They'll share some tips that work especially well for them. 6:30 p.m.

SEPTEMBER 16 (THURSDAY) - "Birdhouse Building 101" - Every garden needs a birdhouse (maybe many). Join us in the garden of Kurt & Karen Schmidt. Our resident CCRS woodworkers will help you build and decorate your own birdhouses - all ready for next year's hatchlings. 14545 Peninsula Drive, Traverse City. 6:30 p.m.

OCTOBER 21 (THURSDAY) - "Roses and Computers" - Join us in the computer lab of the TBA Career Tech Center at 880 Parson's Road. We'll have our own computer expert and 22 computers, so everyone will have the opportunity to learn about (and explore) some of the best rose websites on the internet. 6:30 p.m.

NOVEMBER 18 (THURSDAY) - "Soup and Sharing Night" - We'll be back at Friends Church for our special November meeting, where board members treat you to a feast of homemade soups, breads & desserts. Bring your favorite garden pictures and projects to share. 6:30 p.m. 5th and Oak Street, Traverse City

DECEMBER 4 (SATURDAY) - 1 p.m. Friends Church - Our Annual Christmas Potluck Dinner and Party - Always a wonderful day of sharing and fun.
